WorldSkills Africa

Tiekie Barnard

World Skills Africa (WSAfrica) is an initiative implemented by the African Union (AU) and AUDA-NEPAD, dedicated to raising awareness of the critical role vocational training plays in addressing Africa’s skills shortage. Guided by its purpose, "Harnessing the Power of Skills for Africa's Development," WSAfrica aims to assist AU Member States in strengthening the alignment between skills development and industry. Through the exchange of best practices, benchmarking, and peer learning, the initiative seeks to elevate vocational training across the African continent, driving economic growth and sustainable development.

Shift Impact Africa, contracted by GIZ and AUDA-NEPAD, led the development of key recommendations for the legal, financial, and operational framework of WSAfrica. Our work included:

  • Proposing a comprehensive business model to engage Member States and the private sector.

  • Designing a legal and operational structure, including membership fees and a financial model.

  • Crafting a Membership Development Strategy, outlining criteria, application processes, and membership structure.

  • Developing a robust Communication and Advocacy Strategy, complete with sponsorship and partnership strategies.

  • Providing technical and communication support for the official launch of WSAfrica at the AU Assembly in Addis Ababa in February 2024.

Through our expertise and strategic approach, Shift Impact Africa has played a pivotal role in shaping WSAfrica as a transformative initiative poised to advance vocational skills across the continent.
