Women in Mining Gender Equality Strategy 2025–2027

Tiekie Barnard

In 2024, Shared Value Africa, supported by the Shift Impact Africa team, was awarded the call for proposal to develop the Women in Mining (WiM) Gender Equality Strategy 2025–2027 for the Minerals Council of South Africa. This project, led by Shared Value Africa, sought to address the persistent challenges faced by women in the mining industry, such as workplace harassment, pay disparity, and deeply ingrained biases, by creating a streamlined, actionable roadmap for the next three years.

The project aimed to support the Minerals Council in transforming the mining sector into a more inclusive, equitable, and progressive environment for women. To achieve this, the following comprehensive steps were undertaken:

  • Review of the Existing WiM Strategy: Assessing the current strategy and its foundational measures to identify gaps and areas for enhancement.

  • Analysis of Research on Gender Diversity in Mining: Evaluating both local and international studies to incorporate best practices and insights into the updated strategy.

  • Engagement with Past WiM Campaigns and Member Feedback: Analysing previous campaigns, surveys, and member inputs to ensure the strategy aligns with the real-world experiences and expectations of stakeholders.

  • Development of Realistic and Strategic Targets: Streamlining the strategy to include measurable, achievable goals that can drive impactful change.

  • Proposing Strategies for Stakeholder Buy-In: Crafting approaches to secure commitment and action from member companies, ensuring alignment across the industry.

  • Guidelines for Industry-Wide Implementation: Providing clear, practical recommendations to enable effective adoption of the strategy at all levels.

This strategy is designed to create tangible outcomes, advancing gender equality by fostering a more inclusive workplace culture, addressing systemic barriers, and empowering women within the mining sector.

Shared Value Africa’s leadership and the Shift Impact Africa team’s expertise have ensured that the WiM Gender Equality Strategy is not just a policy document but a transformational framework with the potential to redefine gender dynamics in mining. By aligning global best practices with local industry needs, the strategy underscores Shared Value Africa’s commitment to creating equitable and sustainable value for all stakeholders.
