Respect@Work Collaboration

Tiekie Barnard

In 2023/2024, Shift Impact Africa as the implementation partner and , Shared Value Africa (formerly the Shared Value Africa Initiative) partnered with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to develop and deliver the Respect@Work program in South Africa. This groundbreaking initiative aims to support private sector companies in addressing workplace sexual harassment and gender-based violence (GBV), enhancing business value by creating respectful and safe work environments and reducing risk.

Shared Value Africa played a pivotal role in shaping the program by developing content, training materials, and the Respect@Work Policy. Key contributions included:

  • Designing a comprehensive five-day "Train the Trainer" course.

  • Creating a seven-session training course tailored for the private sector to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent harassment and GBV in the workplace.

The program, officially launched on February 29, 2024, in Johannesburg, South Africa, is modeled on the IFC's Respectful Workplaces Program. It integrates International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions and global best practices to address workplace violence and harassment effectively.

Over seven months, leadership teams and implementers from 20 private sector organizations in South Africa participated in the program. The initiative aimed to mitigate the negative impacts of workplace violence and harassment on individuals and organizations while fostering a culture of respect and inclusion.

Shift and Shared Value Africa’s involvement underscores its commitment to advancing shared value principles by addressing critical social issues like GBV while promoting business sustainability. This collaboration with the IFC exemplifies the power of partnerships in tackling complex challenges and fostering sustainable development across Africa.
